When we lived in New Jersey, we looked forward to this time of year when lilacs are everywhere. Many yards hosted at least one bush promising a profusion of fragrant lilacs. They were perfect gifts for Mothers’ Day and in the 1950’s, they were the dominant flowers on our May Altars. This time of year, living in Southport, North Carolina, I miss lilacs. You just can’t grow them here. I found out why, my go-to gardening book points out that lilacs need cold winters. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. Fair tradeoff. I’ll take the mild winters here.
